Timothy gave Phillip only a little amount of water because in case they weren't going to be rescued soon they would conserve it. His attitude toward Timothy was different after little water because he was thirsty,"This isn't enough," I complained. I felt I could drink three cups of it. (Taylor pg 35) He said he was twelve because he wanted him to stop treating him like a six year old, "Dat is a veree important age," Timothy said. (Taylor pg 42)
Phillips mom said that blacks were different and live differently, "They are not the same as you, Phillip. They are differnt and live differently". (Taylor pg 36)She probably felt that way because Virginia relied on black slaves and she was told that and was passing it down to Phillip. He thought he was strange to be lying next to Timothy because his body scent smelled differently than his parents, " He didn't smell like my mother or father". (Taylor pg 42)
1.Timothy only gave Phillip a little bit of water because they needed to survive as long as possible with fresh water and food. After that little situation with the water, Phillip begins to dislike Timothy because he thinks that Timothy will save it for himself. Phillip tells Timothy he’s almost 12 years old because he wants Timothy to know that he wants to be more independent about the predicament that they are lost at sea.
2.Phillip’s mother, Grace, does not appreciate black people because she is from Virginia, where they begin to segregate black people and white people. Phillip agrees with his mother in the fact that they are different. However, he seems to enjoy them more than his mom because he used to play with Henrik right beside them on Curacao. Unlike Phillip’s mom, Henrik doesn’t have a single problem with them. He does not understand what is so bad about black people. Phillip though it was strange lying next to Timothy because two people of entirely different races and ages and living together would be a very weird and rare thing to be doing.
Timothy gave Philip a small amount of water because if they were not saved soon they would have to conserve the water. If they ran out of water they would die of dehydration. Philip started to dislike Timothy because he was thirsty and he was not receiving much water from Timothy. He said he was almost twelve to try to make Timothy give him more respect instead of being talked to like a toddler.
Philip’s Mother said black people are different, have different ways, and live differently. She felt that way because at the there was segregation towards black people in the south where they live and they thought black people were not as important or as strong as white people. Philip’s attitude is full of aggravation and revulsion while on the other hand Timothy is stubborn and trying to be kind. Timothy is black and whites usually are separated from blacks, and whites loathe blacks.
hey! are we supposed to write the actual quotes as to what Phillip's mother said and do the whole (Taylor, p...) thing? thanks
1. Timothy gave Phillip little water because he knew that if they didn't receive help for a while. They would need water or else they could die of dehydration. Phillip didn't like Timothy as much because he was thirsty and Timothy wouldn't give him any water. He said he was almost 12 so maybe Timothy would give him more respect rather than being treated like a toddler.
2. Phillip's mother said that black people were different and had different ways. She probaly felt that because of segreagation black people aren't treated as well. Phillip is always is stressed about black people and Henrik is nice to them. Phillip thought it was strange lying next to Timothy because white people hate black people and exclude them so it is weird for Phillip because there almost always separated.
1. I think that Timothy only gave Phillip a little amount of water because they only had a small ration of fresh water. I think Phillips attitude changed when Timothy would only give him a small amount of water because he thought Timothy was being selfish. He began to think that Timothy was going to save the water for himself. Phillip said that he was almost twelve because he wanted to make a point to Timothy to stop treating him like a six-year-old. However, I don’t think it was Timothy treating Phillip as a six-year-old, but Phillip acting as one.
2. Phillip’s mother said about black people, “They are not the same as you, Phillip. They are different and they live differently. That’s the way it must be.” (Taylor, p.36-37) I think she felt that way because she was from America and was white, and was raised while segregation was present. Therefore, she believes blacks are different and raised Phillip to believe the same. Henrik, on the other had, had grown up with them, and was raised to be, in a sense, “color blind”. On the raft, Phillip felt it to be strange lying next to Timothy because he was used to being separated from blacks (they would live in their sections and he would live in his), and now he was sleeping next to them. It was something that Phillip probably never imagined he would do; same with Timothy.
1) Timothy gave Phillip only a little water because they have to ration it in case they are not saved for a long time, “’Ah, yes’, he said instantly, “but we mus’ be wise ‘bout what we ‘ave.”(Taylor, pg.35) Phillip’s attitude toward Timothy has changed when he could only have a little water because Phillip thinks Timothy is being unfair, rationing the water is senseless since he is so thirsty and agrees with his mother’s thoughts that black people are different and dangerous, “Although I hadn’t thought so before, I was now believing to believe that my mother was right. She didn’t like them.”(Taylor, pg.36) Phillip said he was twelve because he didn’t like Timothy treating him like he was a lot younger than he really was, “I wanted him to know that I was twelve so that he would stop treating me as though I were half that age.”(Taylor, pg. 41)
2) Phillip’s mother said that black people were different. She thought that they were dangerous and are in some ways weird. She doesn’t like them so she doesn’t like Phillip being near them, “She didn’t like them. She didn’t like it when Henrik and I would go down to St. Anna Bay and play near the schooners.”(Taylor, 36 pg.) She felt that way because she grew up in the South where they have slaves and they were all segregated. She was taught to dislike black people-same quote as before. Henrik thinks that there is nothing wrong with them but Phillip’s family think that they are bad, “Henrik, who’d grown up in Curacao with them, couldn’t understand why my mother felt this way.”(Taylor, pg. 37) Phillip thinks it is strange to be lying next to Timothy because he was he is in an uninhabited island with a black person.
#1 to save it for later. because phillip is not used to drinking only a little. because he was starting to act twelve.
#2 not to trust them. because they were "different". henrik doesnt have slavery therefor he was fine with black people. because at his home he does not sleep next to black people.
1. Timothy gave Phillip very little water because they needed to conserve it. Phillip's attitude changed toward Timothy when he could only have a little water because he thinks Timothy is keeping the water for himself. He said he was twelve cause he wanted Timothy give him respect because he was older.
2. Phillip's mom said that black people are different than white people like different lifes. She felt that way because it was the time during segragation and they thought black people were not as important as white people. Henrik says there is absolutely nothing wrong with black people. Phillip was not comfortable lying next to a black guy because they are usually seperated blacks and whites.
1. Timothy gave Phillip a little amount of water because he knew they had to make the water last. Phillip’s attitude toward Timothy changed when he could only a little water because he thought Timothy was saving the water for himself. Phillip says he is almost twelve because he wants Timothy to stop treating him like a baby “I wanted him to stop treating me like I was have that age,”
2. Phillip’s mother said black people were not the same as Caucasians; she felt that way because she grew up in a more racist town. “They are not the same as you, Phillip. Henrik has a much more positive attitude towards blacks than Phillip. Phillip thought it was strange to be lying next to Timothy because he lived in a very “White” community.
1. Timothy gave Phillip very little water this way they would not run out of water. I think Phillip decided he did not like Timothy because Phillip doesn’t understand they must save water. Phillip mentioned he was twelve so Timothy would treat him that way.
2. Phillips mother said black people were different and should be treated that way. She thinks like this because that was how it was in Virginia where she is from. Henrik on the other hand is not racist because in Holland they were not racist so he comes from a very different background. Phillip thought it was strange to be sitting next to Timothy because he thought he was so different and he was very racist.
Hey guys. Just a quick and simple question. Is Henrik black?
1. Timothy obviously gave Phillip a miniscule amount of water because although he believed, from experience, that some vehicle would rescue Philip and himself, there was a possibility that no help would come for a while. Phillip didn’t understand Timothy’s reasoning because he didn’t understand how serious their situation could become to the largest extent. This is why Phillip became grouchy and he began to dislike Timothy. Phillip also thought that Timothy was treating him non-age-appropriately. Part of this was that since Timothy was black, Philip saw himself as no lower than the man in terms of respect. This is why it was made clearly known to Timothy that Phillip was indeed almost twelve. “I said, ‘I’m almost twelve.’ I wanted him to know I was almost twelve so that he would stop treating me as though I were half that age.” (Taylor, p. 41)
2. Phillip’s mother is against socializing with black people. She feels uncomfortable because she is from Virginia, where they support slavery. The black people were in a lower class than the whites. Since Henrik, Phillip’s friend, grew up with the black people, he enjoys hanging out with them and is so-called “color blind.” “‘They are not the same as you, Phillip. They are different and they live differently. That’s the way it must be.’ Henrik, who’d grown up in Curaçao with them, couldn’t understand why my mother felt this way.” (Taylor, p. 36) Phillip has been taught, however, that these people are to be stayed away from, so he follows in his mother’s steps more-so than Henrik. This is why Phillip though it was weird to be next to Timothy on the raft. “I was thinking that it was very strange for me, a boy from Virginia, to be lying beside this giant Negro out on the ocean.” (Taylor, p. 40)
1) I think that Timothy gave Phillip a little water because they needed to conserve, " 'AH, yes,' he said instantly, 'but we must be wise about what we have.' " (Taylor, Pg 36) At first, Phillip thought that Timothy was an incredibly stubborn man and that he should give him some more water. I think that Phillip was a little angry because he was thirsty and that Timothy would only let him have, ”Jus’ enough to wet d’tongue” So, Phillip was mad at Timothy. Phillip said that he was almost twelve so that Timothy would see him as twelve and not eleven.
2) Phillips mother said that black people were different and that they lived differently, too, "They are not the same as you, Phillip. They are different and live differently". (Taylor, pg. 36) Henrik’s attitude was different than Phillip’s because he had lived there his entire life and was used to the black people while Phillip had only lived there for about 5 years and he and his mother were not used to them as much as Henrk and his family because people in Virginia treated black differently than in Curacao. Phillip felt strange about lying next to Timothy because they were so different and he probably never imagined him sleeping with a black person ever before, “I was thinking that it was very strange for me, a boy from Virginia, to be lying beside this giant Negro out on the ocean.”(Taylor, pg.41)
1)Timothy only gave Phillip a little water because he wanted to save it for when they really needed it. I think Phillip’s attitude changed toward Timothy because he thought Timothy was being selfish and saving it for himself. Phillip told Timothy that he was almost twelve because he wanted Timothy to stop treating him like a kid and that he was growing and needed more water.
2)Phillip’s mom had said that blacks were different from them and that they were different in many ways from white people. I think she felt that way because she had been raised in Virginia and there was a lot of slavery in those states. Henrik’s attitude toward blacks was different from Phillips because Henrik thought that the blacks were all the same as other people when Phillip had been brought up with his mother telling him that blacks were different. Phillip felt it was strange to be lying next to Timothy because his mother had told him to stay away from black people all of his life.
1. I think Timothy gave Phillip only a little water because they didn’t know when or if they were going to be rescued, so they needed to conserve the fresh water as long as possible. I think Phillip’s attitude toward Timothy changed when he could only have a little because he was parched and his throat was dry, “Timothy poured only a few drops of water into the bottom. ‘That isn’t enough,’ I complained.” (Taylor, p. 35) Phillip said he was almost twelve because he thought Timothy was treating him like he was half his age.
2. Phillip’s mother said that black people were different and live differently, “ ‘They are not the same as you, Phillip. They are different and they live differently. That’s the way it must be.” (Taylor, p. 36-37) I think she felt that way because Virginia, her home state, was one of the states that separated from the rest of the United States because of slavery. Virginia was a southern state and slavery was a very big thing there. Also, Virginia also approved segregation between the blacks and the whites. Phillip’s attitude toward blacks was that they were different. He was beginning to agree with his mother. Henrik’s attitude toward blacks was that he does not have a single problem with them. He does not understand why white people think black people are so bad. Phillip thought it was strange to be lying next to Timothy because he smelled different from his mother and father, “He didn’t smell like my father or my mother. Father always smelled of bay rum, the shaving lotion he used, and Mother smelled of some kind of perfume or cologne. Timothy smelled different and strong, like the black men who worked on the decks of the tankers when they were loading.” (Taylor, p. 42-43)
1. I think that Timothy knows that there wont be a ship coming there way for a long time. Philip thought they were only going to be out there for a coule of days. He didnt want Timothy treating him like he was a that age.
2. Phillip's mother said that black people were different and had differently. She said that because back then black people were poor. Well Henrik had groown up in Curacao so he knew what the lives of black people was all about. He felt that he doesnt know what to call Timothy, "mister" or Timothy.
Ethan- No I don't believe Henrik is black. Just Timothy.
1.Timothy only gave Phillip a little water because he knew they would be at sea for awhile and wanted to conserve it.Phillip was upset about this because he thought they would be found in a day so he felt that Timothy was keeping it for himself.Phillip told him that he was almost twelve because he wanted Timothy to stop treating him like he was 6.
2.His mother thinks black people are different. I think she thought this because her parents told her it. Henrick thinks that black and white people are the same,Phillip thinks they are different. Phillip thought it was strange lying next to timothy because he smelled different than his parents
1. Timothy gave Phillip little water because he knew that they could be out at sea for days or weeks at a time. The last thing you want to do is be baked in the warm Carrabin sun surrounded by water only to not be able to drink it. Not understanding the importance of portion sizing Phillip wants to be able to drink more than just a small cup full. So being raised in states of the Virginia he treats Timothy like he would to any black person, with disrespect. When asked his age Phillip replies that he is almost twelve because he doesn’t want to be treated as a kid.
2. Phillips Mom had always told Phillip to beware black people because she thinks their different. Unlike Phillips Mom Henrik being Dutch did not have the slightest issue with black people; they never had slaves or racial problems. Phillip thought it was quite strange to be lying next to Timothy since all he could remember was how black people had always stayed in their sections.
1.Timothy gave Phillip just a little bit of water because if they were to be rescued from the island, they would have some to bring with them. When Phillip was confused about why such a small amount, Timothy said, “Ah yes, but we mus’ be wise ‘bout what we ‘ave.” (Taylor, 35) Phillip’s attitude change when Timothy gave him a small bit of water because he was use to having larger amount of it. Phillip said he was twelve because he didn’t want Timothy to treat him as if he were younger.
2.Phillip’s mother said that black people are much different than white; acting and living in their own different ways. I think she felt this way because in her hometown of Virginia, segregation was happening and black were treated differently than white. Thinking that being slaves is how it should be, she passed the word down to Phillip. “They are not the same as you, Phillip. They are different and they live differently. That’s the way it must be.” (Taylor, 37) Henrik feels that there is nothing wrong with black people compared to white, unlike Phillip who thinks different; like his mom. Phillip feels strange lying down next to Timothy because he smelt different from his mom and dad. “Timothy smelled different and strong, like the black men who worked on the decks of the tankers when they were loading.” (Taylor 42-43)
1. Timothy gave Phillip only a couple drops of water because he wanted to make the water last as long as possible. He did not know how long they would be drifting out in the water. Phillip’s attitude changed towards Timothy because Timothy did not let Phillip have it his way. When Phillip asked for a whole cup of water, he only gave him a couple drops. Phillip said he was almost twelve because he thought that being older meant that he would have higher authority.
2. Phillip’s mother said that black people were different, and not in a positive way. She felt that way because when young, that was the way she was taught. It is difficult to believe the exact opposite of the way one was brought up. Henrik, brought up in Holland, was raised to believe that black people were no different from any other race. Phillip, on the other hand, raised in the pro-slavery part of the United States, was raised to believe they were different. Phillip thought it was strange to lie down next to Timothy because he remembered the ways black people lived differently. That caused him to look down upon Timothy.
1.) Phillip only gave Timothy a little amount of water. That is because he is trying to save the water. Philip doesn’t know how long they will have to stay on the island, before they get rescued. They need to conserve the water and the food. Philip, after Timothy only gave him little water, started to not like him very much and thinks he is unfair. Philip starts to agree with his mother, thinking that black people are different, rude, and weird. He said he was almost 12 not just 11. That is because he didn’t like that Timothy was treating him like a little kid, “I wanted him to know that I was twelve so that he would stop treating me as though I were half that age.”(Taylor, pg. 41)
2.) Philip’s mother thinks that black people are different, low class people, and should be treated like bad people. That is because she is from Virginia, where they have slavery. “She didn’t like them. She didn’t like it when Henrik and I would go down to St. Anna Bay and play near the schooners.”(Taylor, pg 36) Henrik grew up with black people, so he doesn’t see them as different. He likes them and is “color blind” Philip thought it was weird and awkward lying next to Timothy because back in Virginia, black people are always separate from white people.
1) Timothy only gave Philip a little bit of water because he knew that they would have to save the water. They had to save the water because they wouldn't get rescued for a long time and they had to make it last. "'Ah, yes,' he said instantly, 'but we muss' be wise 'bout what we 'ave.'" (Taylor, p. 35) Phillip's attitude changes toward Timothy when he could only have a little water because Phillip was very thirsty " I felt I could drink three cups of it." (Taylor, p. 35) and knew his father had ships out looking for him. "And my father has ships out looking for us." (Taylor, p.36) Phillip told Timothy that he was almost twelve because he wanted him to stop treating him like he was a little kid. "I wanted him to know I was almost twelve so that he would stop treating me as though I was half that age. (Taylor, p. 41)
2) Phillips mother said that black people were different then they were. "They are not the same as you, Phillip. They are different and they live differently." (Taylor, p.36) I think Phillip's mother felt the way that she did about black people because she never talked to them or was around them. " In Virginia, I knew they'd always lived in their sections of town and us in ours." (Taylor, p.40) Phillip's attitude towards blacks was: he didn't really know them os talk to them. However, Henrik van Boven had mad e friends with them and grew up around them. "And in Willemstad, I didn't know them very well either. Henrik van Boven did, though, and he much easier with them." (Taylor, p. 40) Phillip thought it was strange to be lying next to Timothy because he grew up being separated from them and wasn't used to it. "We both drew back, but I drew back faster." (Taylor, p. 40) " But I didn't really know any of them." (Taylor, p. 40)
1. I think Timothy only gave Phillip a little water because they may be stuck on the raft for days and they need to save their water. Phillip began to dislike Timothy after that because he felt Timothy had not been treating him respectfully. Phillip said he was almost twelve because he wanted Timothy to get to know him better.
2. Phillip's mother is against black people because they are from Virginia, which fought on the side of the South during the Civil War and is a segregated state. Henrik is from Holland, where there is no segregation, so he appreciates blacks as much as whites, unlike Phillip, who is with his mom. Phillip thought it was strange lying next to Timothy because he was all alone in this raft in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, without any family, with just this old West Indian black man and a few supplies.
1. Timothy gave Phillip only a little water just in case they run out, “Mebbee before d’night, a schooner will not pass dis way, so we mus’ make our wattah last.” (Taylor p.36) Phillip begins to dislike Timothy because he thinks he is saving the water for himself. Phillip said he was almost twelve to get Timothy stop treating him like a child.
2. Phillip’s mother said that black people are different then white, “They are not the same as you Phillip. They are different and they live differently. That’s the way it must be.” (Taylor p.36-37) I think she felt this way because she grew up in Virginia, a racist state. Phillip agrees with his mother that blacks are different but, Henrik wonders why you would be racist. Phillip is thinks it is strange lying next to Timothy because they are two different skin colors and he is not used to Timothy.
1. I think Timothy gave Phillip only a little water because Timothy wanted to save the water. “Tis the best to ‘ave only an outrageous smahl amount. Jus’ enough to wet d’tongue.(Taylor, p.35)Phillip’s attitude change when Timothy only gave him a little water because Phillip was still thirsty after he drank the water. Phillip started to get annoyed with Timothy. Phillip said he was almost twelve because Philip said that Timothy was treating him like a six year old.
2. Phillip’s mother said that black people are different than us. “They are not the same as you Phillip. They are different and live differently.”(Taylor, p. 36)Phillip’s mother feels this way because she is from Virginia where there is segregation and slaves. Phillip thinks that black people are different just like his mom. Henrik doesn’t mind black people because he used to live in Holland. Phillip feels bizarre lying next to Timothy because timothy is a different race than him. Phillip also feels weird about lying next to timothy because timothy has a different smell than Phillip.
Henrik treats blacks as he does to whites because when he was young he was taught that blacks are not different and not as high of a rank as whites. From his knowledge and childhood he treats blacks with respect. This blog is part 2 of my first blog.
1. Timothy gave Phillip only a little water because he said that they need to preserve their water in case they weren’t rescued right away. Phillip’s attitude changed to Timothy because he thought that Timothy was keeping the water for himself. Phillip said he was almost twelve so Timothy would treat him like a man and not a kid.
2. Phillip’s mother said the black and white people have very different lives and that whites were treated better. She felt that way because growing up in Virginia, they were against blacks. Henrik doesn’t feel the same way. Henrik doesn’t think there is anything wrong with black people. Phillip thought it was strange lying next to Timothy because he was always like his mother thinking that blacks were different.
