1. Timothy wanted Phillip to become more independent because he wanted to make sure that Phillip would be prepared to take care of himself if Timothy ever died or got the two got separated. He also wanted Phillip to start helping out around the island in chores that had to be done. “Slowly I was beginning to know the island. By myself, keeping my feet in the damp sand, which meant I was near the water, I walked the whole way around it.” (Taylor, p. 79) Timothy made a rope so that Phillip could get around the island easier. Yes, I think that I would have the courage to explore an unfamiliar place if I were blind, knowing that the place was small and harmless.
2. When Timothy thought he had malaria, he acted very strangely. Sometimes he was jittery and laughed a lot, and other times he shivered and seemed empty inside. “…but suddenly he began to shiver, even though the morning air was already warm. I could hear his teeth clacking.” (Taylor, p. 89) After this, Timothy never regained his strength. He and Phillip also became much closer because they knew they were all they were going to have for a while.
Timothy wanted Philip to become more independent because if he died Philip needed to know how to provide for himself on the island. Timothy crafted Philip a cane for him to get around the island. Yes because if I was slow and cautious enough I think I would fine and not injure myself from a fall or item.
Timothy behaved strangely and unlike his regular self when he had his illness. Philip aided Timothy with water and gave him a damp piece of cloth that had water soaked in it. The long term result of the case of malaria was that Timothy never regained his strength. Philip and Timothy’s relationship became closer and they became open to each other after the illness.
1. Timothy wanted Phillip to be more independent because e knows he is an old man an does not have long to live. This proven “I did not want to think about the possibility of Timothy dying and leaving me alone on the cay.”(Taylor, p.81)Timothy made Phillip a rope so he knew where he was at all times. I think would have the courage if the other person I had to rely on was trustworthy.I would because then I would know which way to go and eventually it would be routine.
2. When Timothy had malaria he was very out of breath and he seemed as if he was going crazy. He would laugh randomly and talk to himself. Timothy begins mumbling, “It must have been ten o’clock when Timothy began to mumble and laugh.” (Taylor, p. 89) Phillip tore of a piece from his shirt and dampened it with water to cool him down. Timothy is drained of some of his strength and becomes much weaker. Their relationship became much closer, this is due to the fact that Phillip started to do a lot of work and he stepped up because Timothy was not feeling well.
1.Timothy wanted Phillip to become more independent because, apparently, there was a lot of work to be done. To help Phillip, Timothy made a cane so he could walk around more easily. “Timothy had fashioned a cane for me, and I was now using it to fell my way around the island,” (Taylor, p. 79) I don’t think I would have the courage to walk around an unknown place to me if I couldn’t see because I wouldn’t know what would be out there, like animals or dangerous plants or something like that.
2.Timothy was tenser when he had malaria because he needed to keep the fever down with water. Phillip helped him by retrieving water for cool him down. After the illness, Timothy needed Phillip’s help in guiding him and was losing his strength. “He never really regained his strength.” (Taylor, p. 92) The relationship between Phillip and Timothy was different now because Timothy depended on Phillip more. Timothy had just recovered from illness, and needed more help.
1. Timothy wanted Phillip to become more independent because Timothy was getting old and Phillip was twelve. Timothy made a cane to help Phillip get around. "Timothy had fashioned a cane for me, and I was now using it to feel my way around the island." (Taylor, p. 79) I would not have the courage to explore the island if I were blind because I would be scared of tripping over something sharp or falling into the water or something.
2. When Timothy thought he had malaria, he lay down and slept, laughed nervously and went into the water. Phillip pulled Timothy out of the water. "It took me what seemed like a long time to get Timothy out of the water and back up on the sand." (Taylor, p. 91) After the illness, Phillip and Timothy became close friends.
#1 because independancy will save his life one day. a walking stick. no, because im used to seeing everything.
#2 he behaved stubbornly. he calmed him. he got weaker. it began to grow stronger.
1. Timothy wanted Phillip to become more independent because he wanted to be sure Phillip would be okay if he died or got separated from each other, and chores needed to be done. I probably would not have the courage to explore a place I was not familiar with because I would be way to scared of what was there and I’d be scared to trip.
2. When Timothy thought he had malaria, he behaved strangely. Phillip helped Timothy by getting him water and saving him when he went into the water. The long-term result to Timothy’s illness was that he lost his strength, “He never really regained his strength.” (Taylor p. 96) After the fever, Timothy and Phillip’s relationship became closer and stronger.
1. Timothy wanted Phip to be more independent because if Timothy died or went somewhere then Philip would know how to handle himself."I did not want to think about the possibility of Timothy dying and leaving me alone on the cay."(Taylor, p.81) Timothy made Philip a rope out of vine to help Philip make his way around the island. I think that I would have the courage to explore an unfamiliar place if I was blind because it is a really small island i would know if there was anything harful or dangerous on the island.
2. When Timothy thought he had malaria, he acted really wierd. He was crazy and laughed a lot, and sometimes he shivered. "But suddenly he began to shiver, even though the morning air was already warm. I could hear his teeth clacking." (Taylor, p. 89) The long term result after Timothy having malaria was that Timothy never had regained his strength. Their relationship became much closer and they needed some help.
1. Timothy wanted Phillip to be more independent because he knew that there was the possibility that he would die and leave Phillip to fend for himself. Phillips suspects this when he says, “I was starting to be less dependant on the vine rope, and sometimes it seemed to me that Timothy was trying hard to make me independent of him. I thought I knew why, but I did not talk to him about it. I did not want to think about the possibility of Timothy dying and leaving me alone on the cay.” (Taylor, p. 81) Timothy made a cane for Phillip so he could feel his way to where he wanted to go, “Timothy had fashioned a cane for me, and I was now using it to feel my way around the island.” (Taylor, p. 79) I think I would have the courage to explore an unfamiliar place and be blind, but only if there is not anything that would endanger my safety. For example, I wouldn’t explore a place infested with thugs and fast car, such as a city. But I would explore the cay Timothy and Phillip lived on by myself because it was not affected by modern society.
2. Timothy acted strangely while he was ill. He had the chills even through the tropical weather, and was very weak,” But suddenly he began to shiver, even though the morning air was already warm. I could hear his teeth clacking.” (Taylor, p. 89) He also began to mumble, and giggle for no reason, “It must have been about ten o’clock when Timothy began to mumble and laugh. It sounded almost as if he were talking in his sleep, but the laughter, little bursts of it between the wheezes, was very high and strange.” (Taylor, p. 89) Phillip helped Timothy by giving him water and placing cool cloths on his head. He also rescued Timothy from drowning when Timothy randomly ran into the water to put out the “fire” in his head. “For a while, I listened to his heavy breathing and then ripped a piece of cloth from what was left of my shirt, dampened it with water, and placed it on his forehead.” (Taylor, p. 89) The long term result of his illness was that he never regained his full strength. “I helped him to his feet, and we went up the hill together, Timothy leaning on me for support for the first time. He never really regained his strength.” (Taylor, p. 92) Due to Phillip not being able to see the differences between him and Timothy, and Timothy being in need for the first time, their bond grew stronger. So in some ways, Timothy’s illness did some good for their relationship.
1. Timothy wanted Phillip to become more independent because if Timothy died then Phillip would know how to survive on his own. He wanted Phillip to help out around the island doing chores that had to be done. Timothy made a rope so that Phillip could get around the cay by himself. “Timothy had fashioned a cane for me, and I was now using it to fell my way around the island,” (Taylor, p. 79) I don’t think that I would have the courage to explore the cay if I were blind. That is because I do not know where I am, and I could run into a tree, walk into the water, and encounter animals. Although I know that the cay does not have anything that would harm me, I would still be scared.
2. When Timothy thought he had malaria, he acted very strangely and crazy. He often laughed and talked to himself, and he seemed cold. “Suddenly he began to shiver, even though the morning air was already warm. I could hear his teeth clacking.” (Taylor, p. 89) After his illness, he was never completely recovered. He would be weak and tired. He and Phillip became a lot closer because they have been together for a long time, and they depend on each other to survive.
1) Timothy wants Phillip to become more independent because if one day, Timothy gets hurt badly or, maybe, dies, he wants Phillip to be able to provide for himself. Timothy made Phillip a cane, “Timothy had fashioned a cane for me, and I was now using it to feel my way around the island.” (Taylor, p. 79) if I were in Timothy’s position (blind and stranded on a cay), I would probably have to explore the island because I need to get the feel of where resources are and I would rather do it with Timothy there, than him not.
2) When Timothy came down with malaria, he started to, probably, hallucinate. Phillip decided to give Timothy some water and then he ripped of a piece of his shirt and dampened it to put on his head, “for a while, I listened to his heavy breathing and then ripped a piece of cloth from what was left of my shirt, dampened it with water, and placed it on his forehead.” (Taylor, p. 89) Afterwards, Timothy was never really able to regain his strength again. Also, Phillip and Timothy became closer because they realized they rely on each other to survive the challenges that the little cay brings.
1)Timothy wanted Phillip to become independent because if something were to happen to him, Phillip would need to take care of himself, especially since he is blind. Also, Phillip feels scared that Timothy might possibly leave him. “I did not want to think about the possibility of Timothy dying and leaving me alone on the cay.”(Taylor, p.81) Timothy helped Phillip by giving him a rope to hold whenever he needed to get around someplace. No, I would not have the courage to explore an unfamiliar place blinded because I would be scared to get hurt or go someplace and not know where I am. If I was with someone, it would be the exact opposite.
2)When Timothy had malaria, he had trouble breathing and had a temperature that was dropping. “But suddenly he began to shiver, even though the morning air was already warm. I could hear his teeth clacking.” (Taylor, pg. 89) Phillip ripped a piece of cloth from his shirt, damped it with water, and placed it on Timothy’s forehead in order to help. “I had nothing to cover him with, so I just sat beside him holding the cloth, which was already beginning to dry, to his forehead” (Taylor, pg. 89) The long term effect of malaria was not gaining his strength back. Because of the illness, Timothy and Phillip’s relationship grew closer.
1. Timothy wanted Phillip to become more independent because he wanted Phillip to become more prepared if he dies or they get separated. Timothy made Phillip a cane for him to get around, “Timothy had fashioned a cane for me, and I was now using it to feel my way around the island.” (Taylor, p. 79) I would not have the courage to explore an unfamiliar place if I was blind because I would not know what dangerous creatures lived on the island and what hazards might be in the way.
2. Timothy behaved very strangely and seemed to go back and forth from two different feelings, “…. but suddenly he began to shiver, even though the morning air was already warm. I could hear his teeth clacking.” (Taylor, p. 89) and, “It sounded almost as if he were talking in his sleep, but the laughter, little bursts of it between the wheezes, was very high and strange.” (Taylor, p. 89) The long term result for Timothy after having this illness was that he never really regained his strength. Phillip and Timothy relationship grew much closer after the illness because they both knew they had to rely on the other to survive.
1,Timothy wanted Phillip to be more independent incase there is a accident and he dies he wants him to survive," I was starting to be less dependent on the vine rope, and sometimes it seemed to me that Timothy was trying hard to make me independent of him." Timothy made Phillip a cane. I think it would be tough to explore a unfamiliar place without eye sight and that i would try but probably fail because it would not be fun to sit down and do nothing.
2. During Timothy's illness he ran became very hot and than very cold," He murmured dat be good, but suddenly he began to shiver, even though the morning air was already warm." To help Timothy when he was hot he put a piece of wet cloth on his head and when he was cold he covered him in sea grapes. After having this illness he never recovered to full health. I think Phillip and Timothy now have to rely on each other so there bond became stronger.
Timothy wanted Phillip to be more independent in case if he dies and he will know how to survive. Timothy also wanted him to work instead of being a dead weight and just riding on his back,"Slowly I was beginning to know the island. By myself, keeping my feet in the damp sand, which meant I was near the water, I walked the whole way around it.” (Taylor, p. 79) Timothy made a rope to help it guide Phillip and make it easier for him. If I was blind I would have the courage because its not that dangerous and if I followed my senses I think I'll be alright.
When Timothy thinks he has malaria, he shows many strange sides of him. He was nervous, laughed a lot, or sometimes he shivered and didn't talk. “…but suddenly he began to shiver, even though the morning air was already warm. I could hear his teeth clacking.” (Taylor, p. 89) Phillip helped Timothy by cooling him down with water. They became closer to each other because they both needed each other and they trusted each other.
1. Timothy wanted Phillip to be more independent in case he died or if they get separated. Timothy made a rope so Phillip could find his way around. “ I was starting to be less dependent on the vine rope, and sometimes it seemed to me that Timothy was trying hard to make me independent of him.” (Taylor p.81) Yes, even if I were blind I would explore the island because I would be very bored and would like to know my surroundings.
2. Timothy behaved unusually when he had malaria. “It must have been about 10 o’clock when Timothy began to mumble and laugh.” (Taylor p.89) Phillip tried to help Timothy by putting a damp cloth on his forehead. After his illness Timothy never regained his strength. Phillip was more observant of Timothy’s age and health.
1. Timothy was trying to make Phillip more dependent of himself because he knows that he is old and could possibly die leaving Phillip on his own” I did not want to think about the possibility of Timothy dying and leaving ma alone on the cay.”(Taylor p. 81). Phillip now also poses a cane constructed by Timothy that allows him to fell his way around the small cay. I think I would be very freaked out if I was in Phillips shoes. To be cast out into the middle of the ocean with a total stranger not knowing if you would ever see you friends or family again.
2. Timothy acted oddly during his illness, running into shark infested waters and talking to him are some examples. Phillip did all he could to help Timothy by remembering what he did when he was sick. To help Timothy overcome the illness Phillip placed damp cloth on Timothy forehead. All though Timothy did recover he didn’t recover fully ” He never really regained his strength”(Taylor p.92) Even though Timothy didn’t get stronger his relationship with Phillip did.
1) Timothy wants Phillip to be more independent because just in case something happens to Timothy, Phillip will at least now how to get around and do some simple things to take care of himself while he is still on the island. Timothy fashioned a cane for Phillip, “Timothy had fashioned a cane for me, and I was now using it to feel my way around the island.” I think I would’ve had the courage to explore the island even being blind because I would get extremely bored sitting in the little hut so I would slowly venture out. A little bit more every day until I went around the entire island. To be safe, I would just have Timothy tell me all the unsafe things, I would listen to the noises around me so I have a better idea of what is happening and use my cane like a walking stick for blind people nowadays so I won’t get hurt.
2) When Timothy had Malaria, he was hot, but also cold at the same time, coughing, grasping for air, maybe hallucinating, sleep talking and walking, tossing and just being crazy. To help Timothy, Phillip gets him water, wets a cloth to put on his forehead, reassures him and hauls him out of the water, “…then ripped a piece of cloth from what was left of my shirt, dampened it with water, and placed it on his forehead. After Timothy has his illness, he loses his strength and never regains it. After the illness, it almost seems like Timothy is now the one who is taking care and looking after Timothy.
1) Timothy wanted Philip to become more independent so that if Timothy died on the cay Philip would know how to take care of himself. "I did not want to think about the possibility of Timothy dying and leaving me alone on the cay." (Taylor, p. 81) Timothy made a cane for Philip to help him get around the cay. "Timothy had fashioned a cane for me, and I was now using it to feel my way around the island." (Taylor, p. 79) I don't think that I would have the courage to explore an unfamiliar place if I was blind because I would not know what was there and I might trip and fall over trees, branches and rocks. However, I think i would eventually have to learn to be brave if I could never see again.
2) When Timothy thought that he had Malaria he was gasping for air, "One morning in the middle of May, I awakened to hear Timothy taking great breaths." (Taylor, p. 88) mumbling and laughing. "It must have been ten o'clock when Timothy began to mumble and laugh" (Taylor, p. 89) Also, his teeth were chattering "I could hear his teeth clacking." (Taylor, p. 89) and he was shivering. "He murmured, 'Dat be good,' but suddenly he began to shiver, even though the morning air was already warm." (Taylor, p. 89) To help Timothy, Philip put a damp cloth on his head. "For a while, I listened to his heavy breathing and then ripped a piece of cloth from what was left of my shirt, dampened it withe water, and placed it on his forehead." (Taylor, p. 89) The long term result after Timothy's illness was he lost most of his strength. "He never really regained his strength." (Taylor, p. 92) I think that Philip and timothy's friendship got stronger after Timothy's illness.
1. Tim wanted Phillip to more independent because if Tim dies he wants Phillip to be ok. Tim made him a cane to walk around with around the island. No, because what if something like an animal pops out of no where.
2. Tim behaved very weirdly like laughing alot. Phillip helped Tim by getting a damp cloth to cool Tim down. After the illness Phillip and Tim became closer to each other.
1. Timothy wanted Phillip to become more independent. Timothy wants Phillip to know what to do if he ever got stuck on the island alone. Timothy made a cane to help Phillip move around the island. “ Timothy had fashioned a cane for me, and I was now using it to feel my way around the island.” (Taylor, p. 79) I think I would have the courage to explore an unfamiliar place but only if I knew that there were know poisonous animals there. I would also not want to go into water because I would drown. Other than those two things, I would explore an unfamiliar place.
2. When Timothy had malaria he did not act like himself. He began to mumble and laugh “it must have been ten o’clock when Timothy began to mumble and laugh.” (Taylor, p.89) Phillip helped Timothy by putting a wet cloth over his head. The long term result of malaria was Timothy never regained his strength. Their relationship became closer because Phillip started to do more work than he did before.
