1.In Chapter 1, Phillip is enthusiastic about the war. He has always wanted to see one, and he gets the chance to when he sees the “U-boats” in the water. He thought, “If there was an enemy U-boat out there, I wanted to see it and join the people in shaking a fist at it.” (Taylor, p. 10) However, in Chapter 2, he is more worried about the war and must move back to Norfolk, United States. “I was no longer excited about the war; I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction.” (Taylor, p. 23)
2.Phillip’s father let him and Phillip's mother go because he couldn’t look after them very easily at the house. “At a time like this, I can’t be at home very much.” (Taylor, p. 25) Phillip knew he would miss everything about the island: the fun, the excitement, his friends, and most of all, his dad.
1) In Chapter 1, Phillip thinks that war is fun and is excited when he finds out that there is war on the islands surrounding his. He thinks it is a sheer game like the ones that he and his friends play, “I was not frightened, just terribly excited. War was something I’d heard about a lot, but had never seen.”(Taylor, pg. 10) But in Chapter 2, Phillip learns what war is really about. It isn’t just a game, it is violence and death. He hates it, “I was no longer excited about war; I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction.”(Taylor, pg. 23)
2) Phillip’s father felt sad and worried about Phillip and his mother leaving the island, “Yet I saw him looking over the lifeboats. Then he inspected the fire houses on the boat deck. I knew he was worried.”(Taylor, pg.26)also “…he said good-by to us between clenched teeth.”He consented for them to go because he was not the type of man to tell someone what to do and he wanted his wife to feel safe, “But he was not that kind of man.”(Taylor, pg.24)At first, Phillip felt mad about leaving but as the days came closer for him and his mom to leave, he just felt sad and gloomy, “Then I became mad angry and accused her of being a coward.”(Taylor, pg.24) … “Through watery eyes, I saw the fort and the old buildings of Punda and Otrabanda.”(Taylor, pg. 26)
1. In chapter one, war was just a big joke to Phillip. He was actually excited to see the submarines. In chapter two, he realizes just how dangerous the war truly is. He finally understands the war is not a game and it never is. This is shown when the story writes, “ I was no longer excited about the war;I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction.” (Taylor, p. 23)
2. Philips father was truly sad but he knew it was safer this way. He consented to go for the sake of Phillip and his wife.Phillip felt like a coward for the leaving the island also was going to miss the island very much. This is proven, “His voice seemed sad, although he was trying to sound cheerful.”(Taylor p. 25)
1. In chapter one the war was no big deal to him it was like nothing was going on, but in chapter two he was more aware and actually scared of the war. In chapter one Phillip jr. said "We just wanted to see the submarines" (Taylor, p.13) he said that when he wosen't aware of the war and there is a bid difference form chapter one to two.
2. Phillip sr. didn't think it was a smart idea to leave the island because he think it will be un safe on the way to Norfolk. I think he agreed to let them go because I think Grace the wife knew what was best for Phillip jr. to survive. I think Phillip jr. was 25 75 on to go to Norfolk or to stay in Scharloo because he did't want to be killed on the way there and he also wanted to stay here. This proves that he wanted to stay in Scharloo when he said "Why can't they use aircraft and bomb the submarins?" (Taylor, p. 17)
In Chapter 1, Phillip is excited that the German is going to invade the island. He thinks that the war is just a game like he plays with Henrik and his other friends. “I was not frightened, just terribly excited.” (Taylor pg. 10) When it comes to be Chapter 2, Phillip realizes the war is real and serious. “I was no longer excited about the war; I had began to understand that it meant death and destruction.” (Taylor pg. 23)
Phillip’s father felt worried and wanted his son and wife to stay. “Grace, I think you are making a mistake. You are both quite safe here in Scharloo.” (Taylor pg. 23-24). Unfortunately he had to leave, which was hard for him because he had to leave all of the island, including his friends and dad.
1) Phillip feels excited and enthusiastic about the German U-boats in the first chapter and thinks, “If there was an enemy U-boat out there, I wanted to see it and join the people shaking their fist at it.”(Taylor p. 10 ) In the second chapter he understands that war is not a game like he thought, but where there was chaos in war.
2)Phillip’s father is probably sad and reluctant and worried to see his only child and wife leave and he probably only let them leave because he could not care for them much at home, ”At a time like this, I can’t be at home very much.” (Taylor p. 25). Phillip would miss every inch of Caracao probably because he would be leaving his friends, father, and home,
Hey. I just wanted to say that I love your responses. They really helped me out while writing mine.
I was just looking at the front cover of The Cay, and I noticed taht there is a rope tied around the palm tree and Philip's arms. I wonder what that's all about.
1. In Chapter 1 of The Cay, Philip is feeling excited and a bit anxious about the war. He explains, “I was not frightened, just terribly excited. War was something I’d heard a lot about, but had never seen.” (Taylor, p. 10) He is obviously a very curious young boy, but his thoughts seem to change course during the second chapter, when he states I was no longer excited about the war’ I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction.” (Taylor, p. 23) He clearly is starting to understand that war is a terrible thing.
2. Philip’s father wasn’t all for having Philip and his mother leave CuraƧao. He said, “‘Grace, I think you are making a mistake. You are both quite safe here in Scharloo.’”He thought that it would be even more dangerous trying to get back to the United States. He let them go because he knew that Grace, Philip’s mother, would never be content about staying on the island. He knew that she was so set on going back and she thought that it was not safe. Philip and her safety would be possible back in Virginia according to Grace. Philip was extremely upset about leaving, but there was no stopping his mother.
1.) Phillip’s feeling about the war in chapter one and two is very different. At first, he is very excited and happy about the war, because he never experienced one before. In the first chapter he say, “I was not frightened, just terribly excited. War was something I’d heard about a lot, but had never seen.”(Taylor, pg. 10) In the second chapter, Phillip’s feeling changes, scared and worried, and he says, “I was no longer excited about war; I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction.”(Taylor, pg. 23)
2.) Phillip’s father is converned and worried about the war. He wants his wide and Phillip to stay, “Grace, I think you are making a mistake. You are both quite safe here in Scharloo.” (Taylor pg. 23-24).
1. In Chapter 1, Phillip wants the Germans to invade the island because he thinks war is like a game he can play with his friends. "I was not frightened, just terribly excited. (Taylor, p. 10) In Chapter 2, however he begins to realize that war is dangerous; war means death. "I was no longer excited about the war; I had bean to understand that it meant death and destruction." (Taylor, p. 23)
2. Phillip's father felt worried for Phillip and mom and wanted them to stay on Curacao. "Grace, I think you are making a big mistake. You are both quite safe here in Scharloo." (Taylor, p. 23-24) Phillip did not want to leave because he was used to life on the island and he wanted to stay with his friends.
1. In chapter one, Phillip is excited and eager to see the action when the war comes to Willemstad, “It was very hard to finish my breakfast because I wanted to go to Punda, the business district, the oldest part of town, and then to Fort Amsterdam where I could look out to sea. If there was an enemy U-boat out there, I wanted to see it and join the people in shaking a fist at it.” (Taylor, p. 10) However, in chapter two, when Phillip begins to see the dark side of war, his thrill dies when seeing a tanker sink, “I was no longer excited about the war; I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction.” (Taylor, p. 23)
2. At first, Phillip’s father did not like the idea of Phillip and his mother fleeing for Norfolk. He believed that the journey was even more dangerous than staying in Willemstad. However, with the war happening, he could not stay at home very often to look after Phillip and his mother, “No, Phillip, I think it is best that you go with your mother. At a time like this, I can’t be at home very much.” Phillip, when told that he was going back to Norfolk, was not pleased. He believed he would be homesick for the island,” I thought about leaving the island, and it saddened me. I loved the old fort, and the schooners, the Ruyterkade market with the noisy chickens and squealing pigs, the black people shouting; I loved the koenoekoe with its giant cactus; the divi-divi trees, their odd branches all on the leeward side of the trunk; the beautiful sandy beach at West-punt. And I’d miss Henrik van Boven.” ( Taylor, p. 20)
1. Phillip’s feelings about the war in chapter one was that he was so excited to see the submarines and see an actual war, “I was not frightened, just terribly excited. War was something I’d heard a lot about, but had never seen.” (Taylor p. 10) In chapter two, Phillip learned that war was about dying and destruction, “I was no longer excited about the war; I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction.” (Taylor p. 24)
2. Phillip’s father was sad that Grace and Phillip were leaving, “His voice seemed sad, although he was trying to be cheerful.” (Taylor p. 25-26) He was consent to let them go when he saw Phillip’s mother crying, “My father finally ended it by saying, ‘Phillip, the decision is made. You’ll leave Friday with your mother.’” (Taylor p. 26) Phillip was very sad about leaving the island and his friends, “I thought about leaving the island and it saddened me.” (Taylor p. 20)
1. At the beginning of the book Phillip is thrilled about the war. He wants to be able to see U boats and protesters who shake their fists at them. Phillip thought of the war almost as a game or a joke. Although all this changes when Phillip witnesses a boat, The Emperor Tern blows up.” I was no longer excited about war; I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction” (Taylor pg. 23).
2.
Phillip doesn’t want to leave the island at all,”Suddenly I felt hollow inside. Then I became angry and accused her of being a coward. She told me to go off to school. I said I hated her” (Taylor pg. 24). Phillip asked his father if he could stay with him, but his father said he would be better off with his mother since he wouldn’t be around much. Although it was clear that he would miss them both dearly.
In the first chapter Philip is excited about the war until he witnesses one of the ships being destroyed. “I was not frightened, just terribly excited.” (Taylor p.10) After seeing the ship blow up in flames he started to not like the war because of the gore and malevolent spirit in it. Thus Philip ends up understanding how the war is not an event to be thrilled by.
Philip’s father feels poignant and lonely when Philip and his mother leave the island.” Father was smiling and very gay but when the Hato’s whistle blasted out three times, meaning it was time to go, he said good-by to us between clenched.” (Taylorp.26) Clearly Philip’s Dad is anxious when at last Philip’s Mom and Philip set off for their voyage. He let them go because he does not have enough time for Philip and after hearing his wife say we did not love her he made up his mind to let them go. Philip felt hollow and lonely about leaving because he would have to abandon his friends and his Dad.
1. Phillip’s view on war changed dramatically when he witnessed the bombing of a tanker. As if he were living in a fantasy and suddenly snapped back into reality, Phillip said, “I was no longer excited about the war; I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction.”(Taylor, p. 23
2. When Phillip’s mother hastily planned Phillip’s trip to leave Curacao, his father felt uncertain if it was the right decision. The dangers of trying to leave Curacao seemed worse than out-waiting the war on the island. His father explained his worry, “Grace, I think you are making a mistake. You are both quite safe here in Scharloo.” (Taylor, p. 23/24) Eventually, however, his father gave in because of his mother’s continuous protesting. Phillip, also, dwelled upon the fact that he was leaving his beloved island and all of his friends. He knew it was only a matter of time before he would have to say good-bye.
1. In Chapter 1, Phillip was excited about the war and even wanted to sneak out of the house to go see the submarines, “I was not frightened, just terribly excited. War was something I’d heard a lot about, but had never seen.” (Taylor, p. 10) In Chapter 2, Phillip became very aware of how dangerous and horrible war really is, “I was no longer excited about the war; I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction.” (Taylor, p. 23)
2. Phillip’s father felt scared, sad, and worried about Phillip and his mother leaving the island for Norfolk, “ ‘Well, you can rest easy, Phillip. The Germans would never waste a torpedo on this old tub.’ Yet I saw him looking over the lifeboats. Then he inspected the fire hoses on the boat deck.” (Taylor, p. 26) He consented to let them go because he knew Grace would never feel safe on the island. Phillip did not want to leave the island. He even accused his mother of being a coward and said he hated her. He also wanted to hide from his mother on the island until the ship set off. He also felt sad because he was leaving his friends, his home, and most importantly, his father.
1. In chapter 1, Philip is excited about the war. He thinks it is fun to watch just like the games he plays with his friends. “I was not frightened, just terribly excited. War was something I’d heard about a lot, but never seen.” (Taylor, p.10) He felt extremely different in chapter 2 “I was no longer excited about war; I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction.” (Taylor, p. 23)
2. Phillip’s father didn’t want Phillip and his wife to go back to the United Sates because he thought it was safe to stay in Curacao. Phillip’s father wanted them to stay in Curacao. “Grace, I think you are making a mistake. You both are quite safe here in Scharloo.” Phillip’s father let Phillip and his mother go to Norfolk because when Phillip’s father was trying to convince phillip’s mother to stay, his mother said that he did not love her and that is what made Phillip’s father let them go.
1) In the first chapter of the book, Philip is excited by the idea of war. Phillip didn't fully understand what war was in the first chapter. However, in the second chapter Philip began to understand war. He no longer was excited by war and was frightened by it. "I was no longer excited about the war; I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction." (Taylor, p. 23)
2) Philip's father felt that Phillip and his mother would be safe where they where, but Phillips mother didn't fell safe so Phillip's father let let them leave. Phillip didn't want to leave his father or his friends. "The night when he got home, I told him I wanted to stay with him" (Taylor, p. 24)
1. At the start of the book Phillip is excited about the war, “I was not frightened just terribly excited.” (Taylor p.10) Phillip thinks war is harmless. In chapter 2, Phillip realizes war is not a game, “I was no longer excited about war; I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction.”( Taylor p.23 ) He now sees how unmerciful war is.
2. Phillip’s father is sad they are leaving, “I knew he was worried.” ( Taylor p.26 ) Although he is worried, he let them go because he knew it was for the best and it is dangerous in Curacao. Phillip was sad to leave the island, “Suddenly, I felt hollow inside.” ( Taylor p.24 )
1 In chapter 1 Phillip doesn't really know about war so he thinks its cool,"was not frightened, just terribly excited. War was something I’d heard about a lot, but had never seen.”(Taylor, pg. 10) Although he had a change of heart in chapter 2 when he was caught right in it, “I was no longer excited about war; I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction.”(Taylor, pg. 23)
2 His father felt sad but he knew he couldn't spend a lot of time with them, “At a time like this, I can’t be at home very much.” (Taylor, p. 25). He wanted them to leave because he wanted them to be safe and be protected in America. Phillip at first was angry because he loved his father but as it was almost time to leave Phillip was sad,“Then I became mad angry and accused her of being a coward.”(Taylor, pg.24)
1.) In chapter 1 Philip is excited about war because he said, "I was not frightened, just terribly excited. War was something I’d heard about a lot, but had never seen."(Taylor, pg. 10). In chapter 2 Philip was frightened and scared when he said, "I was no longer excited about the war; I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction." (Taylor, p. 23)
2.) He said that Grace and Philip would have to go because it would be the safer way to get out of Curacao and he also says, "Father was smiling and very gay but when the Hato’s whistle blasted out three times, meaning it was time to go, he said good-by to us between clenched." (Taylor p.26) He had to leave the island which means he would have to find new friends and he would have to be the new kid at school
1.In chapter 1, Phillip thinks war is fun and excting. He doesnt know how dangerous it is."I was not frightened, just terribly excited. War was something i had heard alot about, but never seen."(Taylor pg.20) But in chapter 2 his mind changes when he expirences war first hand. He saw a ship get torpedoed by a German submarine and burst into flames.“I was no longer excited about the war; I had begun to understand that it meant death and destruction.” (Taylor, p. 23)
2.Phillip's father felt that he and his mother should not go because they were perfectly safe on the island. His dad did not contest because he knew there was no one stopping her from leaving.Phillip wanted to stay on the island with his dad,” I thought about leaving the island, and it saddened me. 20)
